Prof. Provan moved to UCC from the USA to take up the headship of the Computer Science
Department. His previous position was in technical management at Rockwell Science Center,
where he led projects focusing on control and diagnostics of complex systems, ranging from
the Space Shuttle to navy ships. Prof. Provan is an expert in model-based
diagnostics, discrete-event control, embedded systems, and open-architecture design.
Prof. Provan runs an SFI-funded group, the Cork Complex Systems Lab. This research is focused on
designing control and analysis methodologies for complex systems-of-systems.
