Objective and Goals
The ultimate objective of the SCEWA project is to develop a prototype intelligent early warning system for water treatment plants that will be accessible on line through the Irish Environmental Protection Agency web site. The main users of the early warning system are expected to be the water treatment plant managers and personnel.
In parallel to the project objective, we expect to achieve two important research goals.
- The first will be to define a generic notation/modelling language that will support the analysis of early warning systems.
- The second sub-goal will be to develop a prototype open source software that will support its users in designing, developing and implementing computer based early warning systems. The software will make extensive use of the notation/modelling language that will be developed during the first goal.
The objective of the early warnings to the water treatment plant personnel is to minimize the occurrence of operational problems by "predicting" their occurrence and by transmitting appropriate mitigating and response actions. In case of emergencies the user group might be expanded to include the group of people that have been affected during the occurrence of a severe accident through the activation of alert services which will be embedded within the early warning system.
A conceptual use case view of the intelligent early warning system is shown in the following figure.
